  1. get the XT (or maybe even a Xti) since you can replace the lenses.

    to most photographers, a point and shoot will always be a toy.  


  2. If you plan to use the camera in any situation that required fast autofocus (sports, animals, etc.) then the XT wins in focusing speed when coupled with a good lens.

    And there are stabilized superzoom lenses (such as the Canon 18-200 IS, the Sigma 18-200 OS, and the Tamron 18-250 VC) if you're really looking for an all-in-one lens solution. There'll be compromise to image quality, appropriate for any superzoom lens, but you still have the convenience if you want it.

  3. Neither.

    Hit up a Nikon D40.  The D40 is slightly less expensive, and uses Nikkor lenses, which are the highest quality lenses there are.

    And please, please, don't go with the S5.  If you won't go Nikon, get the Rebel.
