What camera shoul I buy? Nikon D80 or Canon XSI?

Question

Please don't answer with "do your research". I've researched a lot but still don't have a definite answer. Please help is my wife's first D-SLR and I would like to get something that will last.

for me, it's not really the camera body you should look for. try to get to know about the lens offerings of different brands. the quality of the photograph heavily depends on the quality of lens used and also your good technique.if you have the best camera body in the world, your photos are nothing if you attach low quality lens. after some exposure with a d/slr, you'll understand why this is. currently i think, canon has the widest range of lenses you can choose from.

if you watch sports programs on television, you'll see photographers in the sidelines with big white lenses attached infront of their camera. chances are, they are all canon lenses. this will give you an idea on the brand choice of pro's.

getting into photography is an invenstment because you will be buying stuff and it will cost you if you always change brands. spending a lot for lenses will make you stick to a brand. remember that the grass is always greener on the other side so you have to choose wisely.

whatever you choose, i wish you luck. but most importantly enjoy taking photographs! afterall the whole point of photography is not canon vs nikon.

Canon and Nikon are both brands with decades of history. Both brands will last. Repair parts will be there.  My film SLR is 30 years old been fixed 2 or 3 times still works. The type of photos you take will be the point of decision. Close up wide angle  is Nikons  best. Long range telephoto is Canons best. but both will do fine work.  The lenses, if cared for will be good even if the camera body dies. Just get a new body.

practically, you should choose canon xsi over nikon d80.
