In the end, the only thing Americans can do to make others like them better, is to fail.  There is an interesting phenomenon in Europe called "schaudefreude" which loosely translated means happiness over the misfortunes of others.   Add to that  the United States' status as being very junior to these countries, most of whom have been around hundreds of years longer than the U.S.  This leads to the same kind of jealously one may feel when a much younger cousin is perceived as being more successful.  Of course, the U.S.  government would be well advised to understand these emotions and do a much better job of managing them.

I am just going to give some general advice - not just aimed at Americans travelling.

- don't travel in a large loud group that just tramps through/over all the local people

- appreciate the country for it's differences to your own and avoid negative comparisons (even if you think them)  to your own country- people are mostly very proud of their own countries and heritage

- learn something about customs and cultures before you arrive - an effort at a few words of the local language is also appreciated

I think you should start not to generalize things.

Yes, European complain about certain thing.... nevertheless we like other things, it all depend on the subject.

And it's like I started above, not everybody is negative.

Not all of them hate us, we cant make everyone happy so why worry about.
