What can I buy to record my music on my laptop? PROFESSIONAL SOUNDING?

I am a singer/songwriter, and I need to record my music through my computer. I use my guitar mostly, but I ALSO need sound effects and all that jazz using some kind of software. I know about garage band but thats for apple computers only, right? if not, how can i get that?

what software similar to garage band is there for PC's?

Well, ther are 2 programs I have that I use.  WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T BUY ANYTHING CAKEWALK!!!!!! They have a copyright policy that only allows you to use it once.  I was screwed over on that one.  I have "Audacity" a free program. Then I have Sony's Acid Music Studio 7.  If you need hardware, I have been looking into the Behrenger Eurotrack mini-mixer ($30).  I havn't had the money to buy it.  (I don't have a job.)  These two programs should be all you need.  Feel free to drop me a line if you like.
