So i took my car to get the oil changed and to patch a tire. Simple enough right??Well i got a call from them telling me the dip stick "broke" "which is very common in those cars" (nissan sentra). I just checked the oil myself two days ago and it wasent broken then. There telling me the dip stick is ONLY $20 but that they have to take the tube completely out to remove the dipstick and thats like $100 bucks! The dipstick was fine but they are obviousley not going to admit they broke it. And its a pretty well known place (not like a mechanic or anything). what can i do to fight it?

  1. on the nissan engines , it is easy to get the dip stick out , there's a bolt that s***w into the engine , it holds the dipstick down . once you unscrew the bolt , wobble the dip stick out and replace it .

  2. wow that a tough call, it needs to be fixed if you can get the car without running it,  the tube just pushes in and pulls out if im correct its like a pressure fit

  3. Tell them you would be glad to pay for the oil change and the tire repair but since they broke the dipstick you expect them to pay for the new one and the removal of the old one.  When they complain ask for the name and number of the regional manager.  A place like x*x tire or x*x Boys auto, that is almost nation wide will have a regional manager.  If they refuse then ask for the information for the corporate headquarters.  At this point the manager should be accommodating.  If not call the regional manager and corporate if necessary.  You should not have to pay for this.  Remember to compromise in the end and agree to pay the $20 for the new dipstick but not the labor since it was their dipstick mechanic that broke the dipstick.  By the way, I have been working on cars for over 20 years and never seen a dipstick break!  Talking to the manager in person in front of other customers will be more effective than talking on the phone about this.  No manager wants to air his dirty laundry in front of customers or potential customers.

  4. Probably not much. Its your word against theirs. If they wont pay for a new stick, you may want to offer to split the cost so they pay half and you pay half.  $50 is not that much and if you sue it will cost you a lot in time and effort/
