I have a guinea pig called Baby. These days he is keep on eating his p**p. He didn't eat it like he thought it was a pellet. He ate it on purpose! I caught him at least 10 times pooping on purpose and then bending his head to his bottom to get that p**p and eat it. What can I do to make it stop?

  1. dont worry about it its natural i have that with my gienne pig if you are worryed go to see a vet or email one.

    hope i helped.

  2. You dont need to stop your guinea pig from doing that- its natural.

The reasons guinea pigs do that is because they dont get all the nutrients from the first time round, so they eat their poo to gain more nutrients.

However, not all guinea pigs do that only one of my four girls does it, but dont worry-even though its a bit gross, atleast you know that your guinea pig is getting nutrients one way or another!

  3. OMG they are supposed to do that! did u not do any research before u got a GP??? seriously!

  4. take it to the vet

  5. Don't make him stop. It's not bad. He's eating the soft p**p that still contains vitamin c and other nutrients. It's important for them to do that. Best wishes, me and my 2 guinea pigs, Hope and Remmy

  6. i think  its what you are feeding him, try and change his diet or type of food, maybe he is hungry.

  7. You shouldn't stop him! This is a normal and essential behavior in animals like guinea pigs and rabbits. Please read more on it here: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?...

"Coprophagy (eating the soft cecal f***s) is vital to the good health of all cavies as it provides them with necessary nutrients. Cavies may eat the soft cecal f***s 150 to 200 times in a day, usually directly from the a**s. If an animal is obese or pregnant, they maybe expelled and eaten from the floor. Very young cavies may also eat their mother's soft droppings. Some cavies have been known to snatch cecal f***s from other pigs. These f***s are supposedly the best ones to feed a sick cavy on antibiotics in order to reinoculate good bacteria into the digestive system. The drier fecal pellets are also used but do not contain as many beneficial bacteria. "

  8. You shouldn't make him stop!  You should read up more on guinea pigs as it is well known this is perfectly natural behaviour and necessary to their nutrition.

  9. Please read up on guinea pig on the web!

They are called hind-gut fermenters along with rabbits they; NEED to eat their p**p to stay healthy.Do not remove the fresh poops and do not try to stop them from eating them.

Certain poops are cecotropes which contain essential nutrients. It's how the animal was  created. The process of eating these poops is call cecophage. What is most essential is to provide your pig with a good quality Timothy Hay to keep it's digestive track healthy.

You really must read up on an animal before you get it.

  10. This is perfectly normal. Cavies eat their p**p to provide essential nutrients that they can't process from their diet. Don't try to stop him otherwise you will make him ill. (I like his name!)
