Question:

What can I do about my new lawn? It's patchy and full of crabgrass, plus...?

I just built a house and moved in May 1. My contractor had seeded and laid straw. He used a cheap grass seed.

The lawn was not established and I put Weed and Feed on it...Big Mistake, I know now.

I have since seeded it twice with a high quality grass seed and kept it watered. It's about 85% grass, but patchy in places and full of ugly crabgrass.

The soil is great, it a bit sandy and drains well. I have planted tall fescue grass and some places look great, other places are awful.

Would it be safe to use Weed and Feed again? What should my next steps be?

  1. Spray the weeds with Ortho Weed B Gone Max.  Then Next spring put down Scotts with Halts which stops a lot of the weeds from coming up.  Anytime after that you can spray the Ortho Weed B Gone Max on any remaining weeds.   Also if you have a lot of barespots you can fill them in with Scotts patchmaster.  Or the premium seed by Scotts which is 99.99 percent weed free.

I wouldn't use weed and feed.  There are strict instructions that have to be followed for it to even work.  You have to apply it when the grass is wet and you can't water or have any rain for at least a day.  If you do get rain or water the stuff is useless.  Ortho Weed B Gone Max is rainproof in an hour.

  2. buy crab grass killer.
