Question:

What can I do for my Chinese Dwarf hamsters, they have a wheel with rungs?

I got the cage and the hamsters as a gift. The only problem is that the hamsters are TINY and the wheel has rungs. What can I use to cover the rungs with? I was thinking paper tape but then they can chew on it and they might get sick. I read somewhere that I could intertwine paper between the rungs but will that even hold?

Any suggestions? (Besides buying a new wheel?)

Thanks!

  1. I have Chinese dwarf hamsters and my wheels have rungs dont worry about a thing they wont get stuck. My hamsters love their wheel and they go on it every night. They are so diligent that they go upsidown in their cage in the bars. and the bars are at least 1 centimeter apart. Just try it out. Besides they will grow to about 3-5 inches. If they do fall through( which they wont) they will trust you to unhook them or they will do it themselves.

    Good luck. bye.

  2. I don't know of anything that can cover the rungs, but I think a simpler and safer solution would be to purchase a new wheel. What is the reason you don't want to do this? Anything you do put on it will get chewed up by them, and yes, it is very possible for them to get sick from it.

A small, solid  wheel will be no more than $5. Expenses are part of pet ownership, and if you can't afford such a small investment, you can't afford the pet. You can get one that attached to the cage or stands on its own so it will fit in any kind of cage you have.

  3. You could take thin cardboard from a food box (ceral maybe?) and cut it to width and intertwine it between the rungs. Thats what I did with mine.

  4. i do think it would be a lot easier to get a new wheel

think about it would you rather have a crippled hamster or spend a little money on a new wheel?
