What can I do for rash and pock-like bumps in back of baby's head?

My son has eczema and dermatitis. The eczema covers about 80% of his body and the dermatitis keeps his scalp dry and flaky. I've been using samples of Derma-Smoothe given to me by his pediatrician and that is helping his eczema. I won't be able to see a dermatologist for another month. Unfortunately nothing I do helps the rash at the back of his head. He's always had a red "strawberry" at the back of his head; my niece has one at the back of her head also so we just call it a family trait. About two months ago it got to where it was always dry and flaky all the time and I kept it moisturized with lotions and vaseline like products. The about a month ago, I started using Hylira to relieve his eczema and the pock things started growing in his scalp and the back of his head. His pediatrician has no clue what the pock things are and referred me to a dermatologist but we have yet to see one. I've also noticed the pock looking bumps on other parts of his body where the Hylira was used but I've stopped using the Hylira. Anyway, what can I do for my sons head and has anyone ever seen what I'm talking about?

  1. Continue using what the pediatrician gave you and make sure to keep your appointment with the dermatologist.  Other than that, call the pediatrician and ask if s/he thinks it'd be OK to use some baby oil on the scalp to keep it moist and as soft as possible.  I honestly don't know much about the condition on the scalp of a baby like that.

  2. use the zinc oxide cream. you know the one that comes in the tin can made for babies. zinc works well against dermatitis. please try that out and get that playa's game back !!

  3. Poor little guy, that looks like no fun at all!

My only advice to you about his scalp is to use no products on it and if you do use something, wash it off immediately afterward because that will clog the pores and make things worse.

My daughter had really really bad eczema when she was an infant, as she's gotten older it has improved.  What really worked for her was Little Goat's Milk products, they have shampoo, soaps and lotions.

Limit bathing because believe it or not it's very drying to the skin.  I would only give her a bath every other day.  Wash hair last, so that he's not sitting in soapy water.  I would sometimes rub baby oil into her scalp and comb through the flakes and then wash it out in the tub.

Then after bath I would lube her up with the lotion and steriod cream the doctor prescribed.  Every diaper change I took the opportunity to rub the lotion all over again.

I had to change her sheets every day, because that really irritated her skin.  In fact, I still have to change her sheets frequently because it will come back.

For especially bad episodes I would put some Aveeno Oatmeal Bath in her bath to sooth the itching.

I would also wash her clothing with sensitive perfume free detergent and used no bounce or fabric softner.

Good luck, I hope you're able to make him more comfortable!
