What can I do if I have a bolt that will not fit into a threaded hole?

I bought a peice of patio furniture and I am putting it together. I have a bolt that will not go into a threaded hole. Is there any yhting I can do without returning the item.

  1. assuming the bolt came with the furniture, you will need to retap the hole. this will fix the threads in the hole as they have been compromised. this takes a little finesse but absolutely doable. go for it.  


  2. take the bolt with you to your local home improvement store.  look for one that is longer or thicker or threaded differently to suit your need.  Bolts are not expensive.

  3. If the bolt or the hole is stripped you can use a tap or die to re-thread it. If it is the hole you may have to go one size larger with the bolt. If it is the bolt it would be easiest to just purchase another one. Hope this helps.

  4. Replace the bolt or else make the hole larger, to fit
