  1. You'll need to decide the context in which you want to do something important and meaningful.  You could start small, doing something of importance to one person--finding someone to help, whether once or on an ongoing basis; for example, help an elderly neighbor fix some things around the house, tutor a child for a few weeks or a year, offer to help someone you know who's going through a rough time, etc.  Or you could do something a little bigger (but less personal), doing something to help several people locally--join a service organization, take part in a fund-raiser, become a local volunteer, get a job that improves the community, take an interest in local politics, etc.  Or do something bigger that affects a much larger part of the world: take part in a nationwide or worldwide effort against a disease or against poverty or to help the environment, get involved in national politics to help improve things, get involved in a religious organization to help improve the lives of people, etc.

You also need to decide which sphere to start in.  Where are your talents or interests?  What do you have available to you to use to help others?  If you like sports, find a way to help underprivileged kids by volunteering as a coach and mentor, or get involved in an event that raises money for a cause.  If you have a hobby, find a way to use it to help others.  If you can read, volunteer to help those who can't.  If you can act goofy, volunteer to go to a hospital or nursing home as a clown to cheer people up.  Figure out what you are good at, and how you can use it to help others.

Or just start looking around you for opportunities that are appropriate for you.  Look for ads or notices that ask for volunteers.  Be on the lookout for people who need help and make an effort to help at least one person each week (or, if you are ambitious, one a day).  Search for local service organizations and find one to join.  Just find some way to start, since that's usually the hardest part.
