What can I do to challenge myself this week?

I recently got laid off and I am currently looking for a full time job. I got a part time job for the time being (to keep my sanity). What else can I to challenge myself during this time?

  1. Improve your health: take up a sport or practice an existing one.  Swimming is an excellent individual sport, running is cheap and easy.  Or drag a friend to the squash court.

    Improve your mind: Read a book you have never read but feel you should have, examples include "War and Peace" if you have a lot of spare time, or "Pride and Prejudice" if you fancy some romance, or Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything" if you just want to know a bit of everything.

    Improve the world: Volunteer your time to a local charity, be it fund-raising for the church roof or campaigning to reduce carbon emissions.  It is a good way to meet people and feel you are doing something valuable with your time.


  2. How about learning a new language? There are plenty of podcasts that could get you started for free.
