What can I do to decrease my mile time by two minutes?

Last time I ran, my mile was 7:40 minutes, but it might have been because I had expired honey on my toast for breakfast and wasn't feeling well. My best time, though, is 7:00 minutes a couple of weeks ago. I have two months to get down to around 5 minutes. What can I do to make that possible?

  1. My second deflating answer in the last 3 minutes: "You almost certainly can't."

One day soon, on a day when you're really fresh, try the following session at the track: 8 x 200m in 40" with 1' recoveries.

If that's manageable, you *might* be able to hit 5:15/mi by the end of the summer.

To do so, you'll need both to train your 200m speed (through 50m-250m repetition training) and your speed-endurance (through tempo training and 30/30s). Managing this kind of intensity in training while staying free from injury will NOT be easy.

    Good luck!

  2. run every day and push yourself harder every time. when you're running, a good trick that always works for me is to pretend something really scary is chasing me. also, i always start off at a sprint. before you run, i wouldn't have any dairy products or anything acidy. make sure you stretch a lot before you run. don't put too much pressure on yourself or else it will be harder. don't be frustrated if it doesn't work at first. try running five miles a day and doing sprints. you could also try changing your diet to make you run better. and i don't know if this works for running because i've never tried it, but i've heard that swimmers shave their entire bodies to go faster. i don't know about the last one, but it might work.

  3. You can try doing 2 miles in short sprints, maybe 100 meters at a time then slowing to a jog. Thats just for practice not for the actual run. Also stay away from citrus before you run.
