Question:

What can I do to ensure that USPS packages aren't left out in the open/out in the rain?

So, recently I've been ordering a lot from places like DD, Half.com, eBay, etc... and I was wondering... if I don't have a front porch (which I don't), don't have a large mailbox (or the pocketbook for one)... how do I make sure that packages that are delivered are a) not out in the open and b) not going to be rained/snowed on, etc?

I came up with a solution, but I want to make sure that it's something a mail carrier would tolerate... I am planning on putting one of those large rubbermaid storage bins on the ground next to my front steps, right under my mailbox, put a few cinderblocks in it, and put the lid on. Then, leave a note on the top flap of my mailbox instructing the postal carrier to leave any packages in the bin and close the lid.

Does this sound like something a USPS carrier would go along with?

  1. That may work.

But actually what postal carriers do when they have a large box and you aren't there to receive it is that they put  "Pinkish" colored Notice/Recipt in your mailbox saying that the box will be waiting for you at the post office (also indicated on the receipt).  With that being said, all you have to do is go to that post office, present the receipt and your ID card, and receive the box right then and there.

Your idea can work... if the mailcarrier agrees to it.. or if you're not required to sign for the package upon receiving.  I personally wouldn't do it just for fear of theft.  Too many people with sticky fingers and greedy eyes nowadays.

    Hope this helps!
