  1. Insulation in between ceiling joist's. A exaust fan will help but insulation is the most cost effective. Before airconditioning people used to hose down their houses in the late afternoon.

  2. You can add passive ventilation or an attic fan.

If the ceiling under the attic is not insulated, do so.   It won't make the attic cooler, but it will reduce the heat gain down below.

Also, if you are planning to be there a while, plant some trees to shade the roof during the hottest part of the day.

  3. put attic vents in the roof (that's on fire, smile) that closes for winter or put attic fan in but you do the math,do the vents.R W Jones here.?

  4. yeah open up the windows and get the fan running for a while. it would be better in the long run if u could get a tree growing outside  the attic windows.

  5. I've recently had a home energy audit and the inspector couldn't have made it any more clearer. The key to any home is to seal and insulate. Seal any plumbing or wiring entering the attic and make sure you have adequate insulation for your area (see link below).  Other keys here would be have the proper ventilation.  Whether that be roof vents, ridge vents, or soffit vents.  My auditor was not a fan of any type of attic fan.  Some risks of fire have been associated with some of the cheaper fans IIRC.

    Best of luck.

Oh, also check out energystar.gov tons of information here!
