What can I do to improve my picture?

I would suggest a few small areas of real BLACK shadow, sign it carefully, then get it framed under glass so he can keep it for a long time.

I think I would make the bottom right starfish a bit darker.  The composition looks out of balance.  You're moving in the right direction though.

the painting is good but the last star could do with abit more detail and shade try using a light red going on pink colour for it, don't paint on top off the paint thats been dried tho cos it make the paint run.

It's pretty =] But I think you should fill in the negative space with more starfish or something just so it doesn't seem so empty.  Especially the bottom center-ish.
