I'm currently at 4.0 at best and would like to improve all my shots and serve hopefully with the help of video in a short amount of time. I don't want to rally, play, or do other things that would enforce bad habits. I want actuall one on one instruction. Any recommendation on how I can improve as fast as possible would be great. Details would help too. I live in San Diego and don't mind paying for the right lessons if they actually prudently help my game.

  1. The way to improve your game is to get some good one on one instruction. You don't need a coach but a good qualified instructor that you can rely on to help build on your game.

Videos can be helpful for some information but skills are best learned by one on one instruction.

A good qualified instructor can see your strokes, movement, and game and have you make the necessary adjustments to improve it.

A lot of match play unfortunately won't improve your game much. It will help your match toughness but instruction and drilling are the only ways to improve your skills.

Put in the hard work with the right instructor and you'll see marked improvements.

  2. Sign up in USTA and look for local tournament (at your level) at your area.. Practice alot.

  3. play alot of matches.... train regularly with a tennis coach..

you will need to train with a coach to improve.. to have a hitting partner.. for him to improve your techniques

to allow u to hit more accurate shots

to work on your foot work..

  4. also get in shape so you can w/ those grueling 3 set matches in the heat. run suicides, line drills, running in different directions or run hills if u wanna get crazy. work on your core w/ ab and oblique exercises. also do wrist exercises such as rolling up a weight, squeezing a dead ball, wrist curls to get more snap on ur serve and punch on ur volleys.  do some lifting mainly deltoids and shoulders and legs.  make sure you have a lot of shots in your arsenal, not just basic groundstrokes. work on your slice so you can to low balls on ur backhand. as far as lessons make sure you have a proven instructor. nothing worse than having an instructor tell you the wrong stuff.  most lessons just consist of the instructor hitting the ball to you back and forth. you can have someone videotape urself hit and get better feedback than a coach. coaches are meant for when they watch you play matches but that's gonna cost u $$$$. when you have a solid foundation instructors that just feed balls are just as useful as a ball machine. and also watch tennis at all levels since you can learn rally sequences to help you dictate points. u'll probably learn a lot more from watching college tennis than pro. read some books such as brad gilbert to sharpen ur mental game and adjust ur gameplan based on the type of opponent. the only way to improve as fast as possible is through hrs of training and matchplay.

  5. I'm an instructor and basically just look for simple mistakes that u are making. Such as early preparation, taking small steps, and keeping your dominant eye on the ball the whole time. Video tape yourself and then video tape someone who is very good and look at the difference then mimick them. You will have to put a lot of brain power into thinking on every shot until eventually its routine. Or you can fly me out there and i'll coach you and you will get better fast! goodluck!
