Question:

What can I do to increase my chances for medical school?

I am currently in undergrad with a 3.6 GPA. I recently decided I want to go to medical school instead of grad school after undergrad. Because I was pursuing a BA in psychology changing my mind means I have 2 more years of science and math to go. I want to know what to do to help my chances. I know I can raise my GPA and I know I need to get a great score on my MCAT. I am not your typical college student. I have two young boys and am a married 27yr old. My husband is very supportive and works so I can concentrate on school and not work. But with my kids and a full honors course load I don't have much time. I was thinking about volunteering once a week at a hospital and joining the pre-med club on campus but that's really all I have time for. Do you think that's enough for me to get accepted?

  1. Your family life and responsibilities will certainly factor in your med school applications, so I think your extra-curricular plans are sufficient.  Yes, you need very good grades on your science classes going forward!  You can also use some of your classes that might be left for projects that are healthcare-related.

Good luck.  It's great that you have a supportive husband!  You'll need it to get through medical school, although lots of parents have done it, so it's possible.

  2. i've been looking into becoming a doctor myself, and this is what i've gathered:

you need a good GPa, probably no lower than 3.8, you need a super good score on your MCATs, you need to be a very dedicated and diligent worker, willing to give up lots of time to study, and if you apply to a med school and get an interview, you need to be personable and have good motives to want to get into the school. good luck, i really wish i could help more, but that's all i really know. if you talk to a counceller at your college that deals with applying to schools and stuff, i'm sure they can get you in touch with different med schools and see what they're looking for. good luck!
