What can I do to make my cat's final stage of life easier?

He's been diagnosed with early stage kidney failure. He is a very loving 14 year old orange tabby. He's my baby! I'm very upset. The vet said to give him lots of water and soft food (they recommend KM which is carried by vets). He isn't suffering or if he is, he isn't showing it. He is just very skinny and his fur looks rough. He is still very happy.

Give him love and don't get upset with him in his later stages.

I had a cat who went through kidney failure and eventually he refused to use his litter box-it hurt him to urinate and he associated that with his litter box-. Follow the vets advice and treat your "baby" as you normally do. I hope the vet caught it in time and your "baby" will be alright.

You are doing what you need to do.  We have put 3 cats down over the years and it is hard.  Our cats are part of the family and it's difficult to watch the when the time is close.

All we did is what you are doing.  Make sure he is eating and drinking and most importantly happy.  You will know when it's time...he will stop eating (normally first) then stop drinking.  Ours  always towards the end wanted to be alone.  So a personality change is common.

I'd suggest that at the first sign of the change, put him down.  If you wait too long all you'll remember is the suffering.  It's hard to do it before...but you'll feel better in the long run.

My cat used to have a desease called FIP, she was just sitting there after the window, we brought her her food and put a pillow below her, just try to show your cat you love her/him, it's not a "stupid" human who doesn't understand it when you show your feelings, if you really love your cat, the cat will sense it and be happy.
