Is there anything you know of that I can do to protect my property (home, etc...) from flooding?

I am doing a research paper on Flooding, and I think it would be great to know this. I am also kind of interested myself. =)

  1. Move it to high ground.  If people want to build on a flood prone area, current federal requirements demand that the building be up on stilts.  The low area can be used for parking cards and with partitions for storage areas that can be washed free without taking the stilts out.  This, of course means the first floor is reached by a long flight of stairs or a lift.

On this old house, they showed an older house in Louisiana and the first floor was made of glazed brick that would not absorb water if flooded while the second was wood to save weight.

You probably don't have enough land to build a levee on your property so surrounding it with a tall wall isn't going to work.  If you are only talking a few feet of flooding occasionally, you might raise the house on a mound to take it above that height.

  2. You might could dig a ditch around your property.Other than that,I dont think you could really even protect your house from flooding.
