I have real hardwood floors, they are quite old and they are very loud when walked on, we are remodeling our basement and you can hear it all through the basement and it is very annoying. What is best at cutting down on the noise?

  1. Buy a product called, "Squeak No More," or a similar product in another brand. It is inexpensive (around $25) and it works! Squeaking is caused when the joist pulls away from the floor. You will use skinny screws that will reattach the two at the site of the squeak, then the head knocks off in a sunken position, allowing you to fill in a very tiny hole with filler. No more noise!

  2. I'd pinpoint the location of the squeaks and install finishing nails driven down into the subfloor. You may have to drill pilot holes in the hardwood due to its age and density. A long shot is to consider a cork ceiling in the basement. Cork is one of the better sound deadeners. 9 out of 10 times the key to a quiet floor is having no voids between the finished floor and the subfloor.

  3. Check in the basement to make sure your floor joists /supports are  doing their job. If the floors are sagging, you need to take care of that & it should help decrease some of the squeaks.
