What can I do to reduce the amount of dust in my house???

The dust in my house is horrible! If I put something down for a week, it looks like it's been there for a year with how much dust is sitting on it. That's not an exaggeration! I'm going to have a newborn in the house in November so I want to fix this problem now so he doesn't have to breathe it all in!

I live on a gravel road and we have dogs that go in and out through a doggie door. These are things that can not change.

We live in a small mobile home; we almost never open the windows.

There's carpet only in the bedrooms, but soon there won't be any carpet in the house.

We have central heating and AC.

Is there some sort of filtration machine or AC filters that REALLY help keep the dust out?

Is there something I can do so that I don't have to dust twice a day to keep thing in order?

  1. clean every couple of days, dont keep the house cluttered, and dust too. and oopen those windows!!..or yeah, those carpets need to goo.

  2. carpet  invites  dust , what  you  do  is  get  a  couple  of  window  fan,  put  it  in  there  facing  out  and  leave  it  like  that  ...you  be  surprise..........................turn off  a/c  for  a  while

  3. Invest in a commercial air filter, but they are a little pricey .  Check in your phone book or at home depot.  As a last resort you can purchase air filters for each room.  These will range in price from 20 dollars to 100 dollars.  I have birds and dogs and I use the electro static(no filters to buy) and dont have a dust problem at all. I dont know your financial situation but if you can afford it you can also  have an air filtration put on you air conditioner.

  4. First of all.  Do a good spring cleaning.  I know its not spring.  Just clean very good.  Change all filters on your AC and Heating at least once every 2 or 3 months.  If you are finding dust is still bad, change them once a month.  Use a good quality filter.  I have shopped around and Wal-Mart sells a good one at a good price.    Also they sell air filters that clean the air.  They have them at Wal-mart or any home improvement store.  Re-move the carpet and put down new carpet or something you can sweep to keep clean.  New carpet will only add the the problem in the future.  Carpet holds dust and when you walk on it, it stirs it up again.   Open the windows to let in fresh air.  As for the dogs,  make sure when they come in they are clean.   Not full of dust on there fur, mud on there feet, etc.

  5. There are newer AC filters on the market with a smaller weave.  Ask your handyman or someone at the hardware store if they can install filters with what they call a "minimum effectiveness rating value" of 8 at the least.

That might help trap even more dust...

  6. There are several types of filters you can purchase.  Call a local HVAC company to look into an electronic air cleaner, which will help with the dirt and dust. Or you can purchase pleated filters from Home Depot or Lowes.  They are white and thicker than your regular filters. Change them every three months (or when they are dirty).

  7. First clean your air conditioning filters yearly you can have a professional do this or do it yourself by washing off the filter with a hose and replacing it also vacuuming out the coils in the air conditioning will help as well, next a thorough cleaning of the air ducts in your heating system will help keep the dust down in your home this can be done by a professional or done yourself by vacuuming out the ducts

To stop the static left behind on your furniture use a moistened cloth of White Vinegar and water mixed and wipe down all your furniture and knickknacks this will help slow the dust from settling on your furniture, it is best and less expensive to put this mixture into a clean spray bottle and spray onto the furniture, also vacuum out the window sills with your vacuum, even though your windows are not opened dust still comes into the home as mobile homes are not air tight and dust can get in through the windows frames, also it is advisable to wash down your home with a hose periodically to minimize the dust coming into your home, you should also seal any cracks and seal all doors and windows with seals and caulking this will further seal out dust coming into your home, when air conditioning unit is not in use, it should be covered with a cover to keep dust out of home and also protect unit from moisture and dust, suggest a preventative maintenance of washing your home by a professional mobile home cleaning service to keep down dust and more fequent dusting inside home and vacuuming about two to three times a week this should keep down the dust to a minimum with these suggested methods CLEAN THE AIR

Besides managing the sources of dust and dust mites in your home, you can go the "extra step" and clean the air. Install Allergen-reducer filters in your home's A/C system, and change them regularly—this will make a huge difference in keeping the air in your home dust-free and healthy. Also, consider using a HEPA Filter or Electrostatic air cleaner in rooms you frequent most—especially the bedroom.

    Good Luck !
