What can I do to stop fleas from jumping on my dog outside in the yard?

Okay...we recently moved to Tallahassee, FL. Fleas here are like I have never seen anywhere before....they are everywhere!!! My dog has been on front-line for over a year now and never had fleas before, ever. So a few days ago we noticed him scratching, so we checked and sure enough, fleas! He went to the vet this afternoon and was given cap-star (and the fleas fell off) then he was bathed and groomed, they cut the hair real short. So he was free from fleas. So just now, a few hours after we got him groomed I took him outside to go the bathroom...he was maybe in the grass for 10 seconds...I got back inside and checked him...sure enough 2 MORE FLEAS! We have used flea repellent and boroxed the house, everything. vacuumed the borox etc. he definitely gets them from the lawn. So I called our apartment manager and she said she would think about treating the grass/land here which really means she won't....what can we do??? Every time he goes outside fleas jump on him and our apartment company won't treat the grass!!! Please help, thank you!

  1. treat your own part of the grass for fleas, check feed stores or  orschels

  2. We live in Alabama & when we where building our home, we lived in an apartment (where they sprayed the grass monthly). No problem! However, when we moved in our new, grand home this spring, you guessed it, FLEAS galore! We have tried Capstar, Frontline, Advantage. Alas, nothing works. The only remedy I have found is to "dip" them in flea dip once a week (which I think could be harmful to the pets) or to have pest control company spray our yard, which is $300 a quarter for our 1/2 acre lot. I am seriously considering it; for our "babies" sake & for my sanity! Good luck!

  3. Get a flea collar...sheez, not really rocket science here!

  4. Without treating the yard there really isn't anything else you can do to prevent the fleas from coming inside. Even if your dog didn't go outside, you could bring them in on your clothes and shoes. Fleas are pesky little critters that are very difficult to get rid of. We treated our yard this weekend and luckily haven't seen hardly any on our dogs since then. Convince her that she needs to get the yard treated or all the apartments will have a flea infestation, then she will have to pay mucho dinero to get an exterminator.

Another note....I have been giving my dogs Brewers yeast. It is good for their coats and skin and it helps deter fleas. I have a 10 pound dog that I am giving 2 tablets a day and it really is working!! Some people don't think brewers yeast is good for dogs, but it seems to be working for us!

The spray we used on our yard is called Ortho Max.

  5. get ur dog a flea or tick collar. it prevents the flea and ticks from jumping on to ur dog.. and buy some flea spray for ur yard and spray it all over ur yard. but when u sprayed the yard, don't take ur dog to yard immidiatly but just wait for couple of hours.

  6. There are not a lot of options for treating you yard, as fleas have little regard when it comes to private property. The treatment for outside, is minimally effective, at best. You are definitely doing the right thing by applying topical treatment to your dog and treating the inside environment. I would, however, recommend Advantix as opposed to Frontline as it can sometimes work better for fleas, creating the "hot feet" effect, the fleas will often jump right off. Just because you see the fleas, doesn't mean the medication is not working. Fleas will still be attracted to your pet and jump on for an intended meal, however, they will die from their dinner, unable to reproduce, or lay eggs. You could take a flea comb to him after he goes for walk to make sure he isn't bringing in any tiny hitch hikers, however, the topical medication, coupled with the borax powder, should have the problem under control.
