Question:

What can I do to stop my 2 year old daughter's hair from matting so bad?

Her hair consists of loose curls. Very soft and she has a lot of it. But, if she lays on her hair, it tends to tangle. Sometimes it gets really bad. I bought a 2 in 1 conditioner but it only seems to work a couple days. I guess maybe I should just wash her hair everyday to get the oil, dirt and the junk that gets in her hair when she touches it with sticky fingers etc. I just don't know. Any ideas?

  1. 2-in-1 hair products have a reputation for cleaning your hair just fine, but the softness they impart tends to leave something to be desired.  Because your daughter is so young, you don't want to give her any heavy products, but try using Pantene Conditioners;  they have tons of different kinds for all hair issues, and one that helps smooth the hair could help keep it from tangling so much.  When you wash her hair, make sure you brush it out afterwards while it's still wet so it dries in a more uniform way;  this will cut down on a lot of tangle potential.  Speaking as someone who has hair just like your daughter, this is what works for me.

If you're worried about finding the proper shampoo that's safe to use on your daughter, call a hair salon and ask what they recommend.  They will be more than happy to offer up information;  they'll likely try to push their more expensive salon brands, but any hairdresser worth her salt will also tell you about the store-bought brands best suited for little heads.

  2. Well first of all, shampoo stripps away the oils. You need to use a lot of conditioner with her hair type. You can use conditioner for damaged hair, (even through her hair is not damaged) because it rebuilds the oils. You can use canola oil, and brush it through her hair when it becomes so naughty that conditioner won't work. Use half a cup in her hair, and lay her over the sink so that the oils won't get on the floor. Work it through her hair, and leave it in for a while, then brush her hair. Do this treatment every day until her hair strengthens. Only use shampoo once every two weeks to wash out the grime, but the conditioner will do that it you scrub her scalp. So shampoo is not really necessary.

  3. It sounds like your daughter has a problem with the cuticle layer of her hair.  This is very common.   An easy fix would be to use a leave in conditioner on her hair.  The cuticle on your daughter's hair, when looked at under a microscope, will look like the outside surface of a pineapple.  All those points sticking out.  The points are tangling on each other.  The leave in conditioner will fill in all those gaps, so the points have nothing to grab on to.  The 2 in 1 products don't leave enough behind to do that job.  You may also want to try putting a satin pillowcase over her pillow.  Satin allows the hair to glide over the surface.  Polyester, and cotton have a tendency to grab the hair which can cause more tangling.

  4. after washing comb a leave in conditioner thru her hair
