Question:

What can I do to the walls in the doorways of my home to stop my cat from rubbing up against the paint on them

My home has lead-based paint underneath more modern paint. My cat loves to rub his head up against any corner he can- like doorways or extrusions. I'm worried he will eventually wear off the modern paint and end up getting lead paint all over himself.

What can I do to cover the corners so that he will not rub up against the paint?

I was thinking maybe something like rubber gaskets that have a 90 degree angle in them that i could position from the floor and three feet up- then he would rub against that instead. Some of the doorways have fancy moldings so here it would be better to have something very large to cover the entire bottom of the doorway...

Any ideas?

  1. There are clear plastic corner strips that are made to protect them, but I bet that there are scented oils that cats don't like and you could apply a dab somewhere.

  2. They sell corner covers made of clear plastic, cheap at any home store. Just nail them on or sometimes they have adhesive but mine fell of unless i nailed them. the strips are like 6 feet long and you cut it to fit.

  3. Haven't you just answered your own Q

Try making a scratching style post that is reminiscent of your corners.

  4. Put the cat outside. Of course I am joking, the key here would be to get as many layers of paint on as possible. Get a painter to come in and get some primer, and a few good coats of a high solids paint. You want to seal that stuff as far from you, the cat and everyone else as you can. lead is some bad stuff. Or you can put some 6 inch crown molding in as custome or makeshift baseboards.
