Hi there,

I'd be very grateful for every tidbit of information you could give me about what I could do with a BFA in music theatre. PLEASE give true advice, your real source of information and any other opinion you think important to share. Thank you!

  1. Most likely get a well rounded experience and prepare to go back to school for another degree.  I had a friend who got one and couldn't do anything with it.  He ended up choosing the medical profession.  I think it really depends on the individual.  Degrees are just expensive ways of saying I am dedicated to finish something I started.  Think about all the people who get degrees and end up doing something completely different once they graduate.

  2. Really, all arts degrees are useless.  The valuable part is not the degree, but the training you receive while studying for the degree.  In the arts it is the skills that get you a job, no the degree.  However, you do make a lot of contacts in school that can open doors for you.

If you want a job using you BFA, I'd get certified as a teacher as well or else get advanced degrees so you can teach college.

If you want to perform musical theatre; practice constantly, find a great teacher, start shaking hands and meeting people in the business.  This may or may not involve getting a degree.
