What can I do with a driveway 12" higher than my walkway?

My old driveway had dropped so much there was at least a 12" difference between the garage and the driveway. The new driveway was layed yesterday, but to get the driveway to properly level with the garage they had to build it up quite a bit. This has resulted in about a 12" step down from the front corners of the driveway to the walkways that lead to my front and side doors.

Is my only option to get a load of dirt/gravel and raise my walkways, or are there other options I can explore (i.e. pavers resting on a 4x4 frame to raise the walk, etc...)?

  1. For each 12" transition from driveway down to sidewalk, you might pour a concrete ramp.  Or pour a 6" high concrete step.
