I'm entering my 4th year in college and I'm a history major with a 3.10 overall GPA

I'm almost done with my minors in Accounting and Mathematics.

I've worked as a private Math/Science tutor for the past 3 years for high school students and this past summer I worked as a student intern at my campus' financial aid services (continuing to do that now)

So what exactly can I do with a history major? Where do I go from now

Considering I've taken accounting, am I eligible to take the CPA Exam? I'm also a huge sports fan and I have a fair knowledge of how contracts and dealings work in the sports world since I read about transactions made by sports franchises everyday...is that a better way to go? like get into a sports management program

im kinda lost

help please1

Thanks

  1. dont you think you should have thought about that that BEFORE taking the classes?

you can be a history teacher

  2. Hello,

I know how you feel, I was a History major in college with minors in Educational Technology and English.

I am now in Graduate school. You can go to Graduate School and major in History, or you can double major in Accounting. You can speak to your advisers and see what kind of academic advise they can give you. Sometimes they are not as warm and friendly as you would like them to be, but they are wise and they will lead and guide you into the direction that you would like to go. Seek a mentor in the field that you want. That is what I have done and I am planning to become a college professor. I will graduate with my Masters degree and will begin my Ph.D next fall.

With a History degree you can become a Museum Curator* ( * you may need additional course work ) , A Secondary History teacher ( You will need a Teacher's license, either traditional, if you go through your school or non-traditional a.k.a. alternative teacher license.

Work in a Museum or a historical park as a tour guide, a Historian,  A college professor*,( *of course you will need to go to Graduate School and seek a Master's in History and a Doctorate in History. )

The American Historical Association states that you can find a career

in advertising executive, analyst, archivist, broadcaster, campaign worker, consultant, congressional aide, editor, foreign service officer, foundation staffer, information specialist, intelligence agent, journalist, legal assistant, lobbyist, personnel manager, public relations staffer, researcher, teacher , and educator, researcher, communicator or editor, information manager, advocate, or even a businessperson.

There are other Employers who will hire you but you must know how to market yourself. Ask yourself what is it that History has taught me and how do I want to present it and market it. Clear Thinking, Analyze data, confirming if historical events are true, etc. You are your own Brand. People like Oprah Winfrey have created their names into a brand name. That is a way of learning that you are your best asset.

The American Historical Association also lists these careers:

    Historians as Educators

    Elementary Schools

    Secondary Schools

    Postsecondary Education

    Historic Sites and Museums

    Historians as Researchers

    Museums and Historical Organizations

Cultural Resources Management and Historic Preservation

    Think Tanks

    Historians As Communicators

    Writers and Editors

    Journalists

    Documentary Editors

    Producers of Multimedia Material

    Historians As Information Managers

    Archivists

    Records Managers

    Librarians

    Information Managers

    Historians As Advocates

    Lawyers and Paralegals

    Litigation Support

    Legislative Staff Work

    Foundations

    Historians in Businesses and Associations

    Historians in Corporations

    Contract Historians

    Historians and Nonprofit Associations

Do not give up, Seek through the options and find something that you are happy with.  Also seek advise from your Career center because they can become your best asset in choosing a career that is best for you. Good Luck to you and I wish you well! God bless you.

  3. In 1984, I graduated with a double major in English and social science, which was essentially history. In retrospect, it seems that I majored in pre-Jeopardy, but it also worked very well as a pre-law education. I did go to law school for a year, but found it boring, and ended up as a newspaperman. I'm not saying that these are the only options, only that a liberal arts major is surprisingly well-prepared for the "real world," contrary to what people think. Even the multinationals are starting to recognize this, and employing liberal arts grads because they have better analytical and writing skills, as well as experience in critical thinking and synthesis. I don't know if sports agency is the answer, but I think you are better prepared for life, and more employable, than you might think.
