Now that I think about it, is criminology and criminal justice the same thing? And I'm in high school, about to graduate and I have a pretty good idea of what I want to do. I want to be a psychologist but I want to counsel criminals already in jail and juveniles. I don't want to do the whole forensic thing, I just want to counsel criminals that already have done the crime. Or I could counsel normal people. What jobs could I do with a major in psych and minor in crim. and what do I have to get in order to achieve that? BA or Masters or PhD. I'm hoping I don't have to do a PhD. Thanks.

  1. I think Mater in Psychology would facilitate achieve your goal.  I think the major achievement in psychology cannot be precisely restricted by definition.  However, it all is pertinent to social and community services.  But I would quite laudatorily agree with you (considering it one of the major achievements in psychology) to counsel the criminals already in jails and juveniles so that REPETITION of the crime(s) is totally eliminated from their minds and they leave the jail, upon completion of their sentences, with clean-slated mind.  And minor in criminology would be mass awareness of people never to ignore importance of seriousness of the petty and/or smallest crimes, which ultimately lead to be courageous of committing bigger crimes.  This thing could catagorically be elaborated for inclusion in the text of appropriate school level for awareness of the group of children expected to be capable of comprehending its importance.  It could contribute help a peaceful society in the country.

Wish you all the best and every success in achieving your very nobal goal.

  2. If I was to go to school THAT long... I would become a psychiatrist (you can give meds), not a psychologist (can not give meds). Especially if you want to counsel in the justice system. If you don't want to go that far in school. Then get a masters in Social work. You can DO a LOT with any of these degrees in the criminal justice system. I wish you the best... it is a great career choice.

  3. You should be a criminal psychologist. You study the wills, thoughts, intentions and reactions of criminals, perfect for you.

  4. I agree with everyone else - try to get a job as a counselor in a prison or detention center.

As for the degree, I say go for the Masters because everyone has a BA now.  A Masters will help you stand out a little more.

Criminology is more about the study of crime. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criminology

  5. WORK HARRD YOO. and research would help. ask the professors?

  6. I have a friend with that very degree that works in a juvenile detention facility. After getting her masters she was promoted to supervisor there. You sure don't need a PhD unless you want to teach those classes at a university. Counseling is very limited though.

  7. thats not a very nice answer shes askin a question for an answer not to be called a dumbass....
