Question:

What can I do with an iron that no longer works? Can I send it somewhere for the materials to be recycled?

I try to be environmentally conscious as much as possible so I always try to look for alternatives to throwing things out whenever possible. It seems that an iron has a lot of metal in it, which may be reusable in some kind of recycling plant somewhere. Does anyone know if an old non-functional iron could serve some purpose? I know that in NYC, there are actually theatre groups who take old non-working goods to use as props and furniture on sets. The place, however, is an hour and half from my home. Too far for me. I need some creative alternatives.

  1. two options that I see:

Offer it on your local Freecycle(tm) group (it's part of Yahoo Groups, look it up if you like to keep things out of landfills).  There are usually people in the group that tinker with/fix things or a student that wants to disassemble things.

Give it to a srap metal person.  Our local Freecycle(tm) group has a couple of people that make their living recycling scrap metal.  I'm sure you could find one in your phone book.  You might look under recycling, Scrap Metal or Junk Collector?

Thanks for helping our plant :)

  2. A door stop

    A paper weight, even disassembled
