Question:

What can I do with my degree now? (Anthropology)?

I have a bachelors degree in Anthropology in which I emphasized North American Archaeology. I even received minors in American Indian Studies and Geology. However, now my life has changed. I don't want to work in archaeology anymore (or not for quite a while--I may return later in life). However, I want to work with kids in some way. I found that I thoroughly enjoy being a Scout leader. Any suggestions for jobs as I look into returning to the work force after an extended absense?

  1. get a teaching degree

  2. Some universities have a master's degree in teaching (as opposed to education) - in 1 to 2 years you can become certified to teach at the secondary school level.  Your anthropology degree might make you a good candidate to teach HS social sciences.

If you don't want to go back to school, some states allow one to do substitue teaching with a BA or BS in any field.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

  3. Teach, give museum tours to younger kids, or give demonstrations in archaeology. One of my old college professors (an archaeologist) use to visit the local elementary schools by request and teach children how to make stone tools and the significance behind them.

  4. I suggest that you take a work that is fulfilling and will make you happy, contented, and enjoyable. Why don't you try to enter in the seminary...?

  5. Inquire at a museum.

  6. I have my Master's in anthropology with emphasis in archaeology (North American Historic/Public Archaeology).  You will not be able to find much in the field of anthropology with just a BA but that shouldn't deter you.  People with your background can work as field technicians for CRM firms, for state Archaeology or Historic Preservation departments, and also some Native American tribes have Tribal Historic Preservation Officers.  If you don't want to work in the field of archaeology but still want to work in anthropology the fact is you won't find much.  Museum work is relegated to the field of Museum Studies or people who have extensive museum background.  The best thing to do is to go talk to a career counselor or go to grad school.

  7. Don't waste your money on grad school unless it is for a Ph.D. A masters in Anthropology won't help. TRUST ME. I regret it and the debt I am now in. In order to teach or find a good museum job, you really need a Ph. D.  Good luck, I hope you can find something.

  8. what about teaching?
