I will happen to be in Hamburg, Germany for all of Sunday. I've heard I should go to the fish market and the red light district, but that's about all. What would people who have been there recommend?

  1. The fishmarket is only from 5am-11am each Sunday,  so that would still leave an entire day. Sunday is truly the day of rest in Germany, so similarly to a lot of European cities, general stores and businesses are closed and people usually relax on those days with not a lot of hustle and bustle. With its amount of discos and bright lights, the red-light district is only exciting on a Friday or Saturday night (it's very ugly during the daytime) and isn't the best place to visit on a Sunday. . But museums, cafes, restaurants and theatres are open.  Weather permitting, I would reccomend grabbing picnic style foods and reading materials from the small shops and bakeries open in major train stations such as Altona,  Damntor, or Main Station Hauptbahnhof, and heading to a beautiful outdoor park for relaxing such as the Garten fur Planten Und Blumen, accesible by Bus #3. it's not very far from the center of town.  Other options for enjoying the outdoors are having a boat tour around the Elbe river at Landungsbrucken, or a more romantic looking boat tour downtown at the Alster lake in front of S-train station "Jungfernstieg". If the weather is bad,  the easiest thing to do is what the locals do, which is  go to a museum,  or hang out at a quaint cafe, read,  and eat leisurely. the most casual and colorful cafes can be found in the Shanzenviertel neigborhood (S or U train, "Sternschanze" stop) exit Schulterblatt, or the neighborhood known as Ottensen (S train, " Altona" stop), exit Ottensen Haupstrasse.  Sunday nights are also good for concerts, so check the local listings while there.

  2. One day is not enough for Germany´s hottest city .....

Take the ferry from Landungsbruecken to Oevelgoenne (u can use your subway ticket) and the walk to Teufelsbrueck - enjoy the JEnisch House Park ....

Have lunch at Süllberg Restaurant in Hamburg-Blankenese; great view http://www.suellberg-hamburg.de/suellber...

Then of course: City Hall - Michel church - Alster Lake, Jungfernstieg .....

    Kunsthalle Art Museum: Rothko exhibition

..... u can easily spend weeks in this exciting city - I travel there every year

  3. I don't know why people always talking about the red light district. So stupid.

If I was there for one Sunday, I will be going to the ZOO, make some boat ride see the Hamburg, there is so many interesting old buildings, cafes, restaurants, museums, parks.

Just relax and have fun, great city.

  4. It actually depends on your interests and varies from sightseeing tours through the harbour on small boats, visiting the largest exhibition of toy trains in the world, a 30-minute sightseeing of a submarine, to visiting the Hagenbeck Animal Park.

For visiting the fish market you must be an "early bird" since it closes at 10 a.m.

Below is a suggestion for a one-day tour.
