What can I do with the satellite receivers I see in Maplins (UK)?

I live in the UK and sometimes I see some non-sky satellite dishes/receivers.

What can you do with these e.g. can i get freesat or european channels. in which case are they free?

  2. You can aim the dishes at other satellites, but basic equipment has limited choice. If you want English channels, then Sky is the only one worthwhile.  A small dish will only be able to receive a signal from satellites close to Astra 28.2 degrees(Sky TV).  A free-to-air(FTA) only digibox, will not be any use for pay channels. The most commonly used satellites in Northern Europe are  Hotbird,at 13deg. East, Eutelsat, at 16 deg, East, and Astra at 19.2 deg. East. These have various foreign channels.
