What can I do with the stock situation on this AK-47?

See the links on the bottom to see what I am talking about.

I bought this just like you see it for $170 from the local gun shop. I want to add a regular stock or some kind of stock in addition to the Pistol Grip. I have been looking all over the place on the net and I have found a few different places that make them for almost every variant. What I need to know is what is this receiver? I am assuming it is stamped. It is a Maadi Imported by Century Arms. It says it is a MISR Receiver. Can I add another stock tang to the bottom? Or maybe pop some pins to get rid of that flat part on the back of the receiver to accomodate the end of a stock to actually recess into the rear of the receiver. Thanks for the help.

  1. Scroll down to post #7 it will answer a lot of your questions

I believe that that gun came with a thumbhole stock

It may only take a thumbhole

  2. I can't see all of the gun, so my answer is going to be several parts, not all may apply.

If this is an AK pistol (which it looks like one from what I can see of the rear of the receiver) you may or may not be able to add a stock.  If barrel length is 16+ inches, then all you would need to do is drill out the rivets in the rear trunnion and replace it with a standard trunnion.  The one you have looks like a regular trunnion that was modified so a stock couldn't be added.

If barrel length is less than 16 inches, you would have to register it as a short barreled rifle to add a stock.  IT would cost a $200 tax and would require approval from the ATF to make the modification.  Upon receiving written approval you could then  replace the trunnion and add a stock.

If barrel length is less than 16 inches and you want to avoid the SBR hassle then you would need to replace the barrel first and then add a stock.  First by replacing the barrel, you would prevent accidental assembly of an unregistered SBR.  When a barrel is added so barrel length is 16+ inches you may then remove the rear trunnion and replace it so a stock can be added.

  3. One thing about AK parts is that a LOT of them require minor fitting with a Dremel tool. Because so many countries manufacture AKs, the specs are not 100% accurate.

Buying the stock will probably fit, but save a Saturday morning for some fitting.

Come to think of it, depending on how the rear plate was installed on your AK, a little dremeling could remedy that as well. Just check state and local laws before attempting.
