We have Band Camp at our school every day this week from 8:30-3:30. I am really new at my instrument and can BARELY get the notes out. I've played in 3 parades but never a formal show. I'm scared...I have a solo...What can I expect?!?!

I'm also all types of worried about uniforms and stuff, what if none fit?!!? oh lanta..this is terrible...

  1. they measure you for your uniforms so it will fit.

expect a lot of marching and redoing things millions of times which can get old but they want to make sure every thing runs as good as possible. they'll understand that your new at your instrument just make sure your practicing and showing everyone that you are trying.

it will be hot outdside so make sure your prepared for the heat have tons of water and stay away from dairy products that can possibly make you sick

  2. One guy shoving a tuba up another guys butt and then and then they will make u play it... JK it just going to be laid back. dont worry

  3. Ok dude first off relax. What instrument do you play? If you've just started with practice you'll get better, pick something easy for you to play at your solo (if they havent picked it for you that is) and just practice. Chances are you'll find a uniform that'll fit. If not just fork over the extra cash to get yourself one. How did you perform in 3 parades without your uniform? In my band if you dont have your uniform your outta luck, all had to buy our uniforms. I used to be in the Soul Tigers Marching Band (just recently left) maybe your band will go against ours at Warren County. But trust me just relax you'll be fine.

  4. you have been in 3 parades and you think that your bad?  you probably meant to say that you just got a new instrument.  but i cant really help you unless you tell me what instrument oyu play.  all i can say is that you have played before and you just need to practice and practice and you should be fine.  besides, if you do mess up, you have an exuse: your a beginner.

    hope i helped

  5. Hey I just attended rookie camp and tomorrow I go to band camp from 7:30am-5:30pm!  Anyway, my director said we will be preparing our show the whole week.  First you will start of learning your drill (they'll teach you what that is) and then you will bring out your instrument later.  Make sure you wear sunglasses and bring lots of water!  You could be standing at attention towards the sun!  Always remember, think tall, chin up as if you were using it as eyes...and make sure you are roll steping well when you march so it doesn't sound like "wah wah"  As for the instrument....why would they give you a solo on a new instrument?  That's harsh...  Also, don't worry....everyone is bad on a new instrument...I can't even march and play at the same time yet.  Remember...your mind is NOT designed to remember "roll feet, chin up, play an instrument, remember drill, be tall, etc" all at the same time so DON'T WORRY!  You will get better and muscle memory will take over.  NEVER repeat something...when the director says "let's do this again" ALWAYS focus on ONE thing to improve.  That is how we are being taught as freshmen.  I was freaking out JUST like you until I talked with my past director.  You will be fine with a new instrument...the director shouldn't expect your solo to sound amazing.  It will be OK.  STOP FREAKING OUT!  Don't compare yourself to others either....that's like comparing an apple to a banana, sure they're both fruit, but they are VERY different....so are humans.  Anyway, just go in to band camp tomorrow and try your hardest.  If you are that freaked out, go in a little early tomorrow and explain to your director that you are a little nervous about your solo.  You'd be amazed how wonderful band directors are at giving advice.  Also, the drum major or any of the officers should be able to help you out too.  I suggest something for you...when I was freaking out JUST LIKE YOU a couple of days ago...I watched this.  It is helping me a lot too, because here I am giving you advice on what I was freaked out about.  http://tvshack.net/movies/The_Secret__20...   Trust me...it will help if you watch it.  And again, stop panicking...it'll be okay...what do you think director will expect for someone on a new instrument?  Obviously their standards won't be that high.  Good luck....

PS Don't worry....they will size you.  (=  And they will get one to fit you...there was this really tall kid sized the other day and they have to get his made longer.  So no worries....they will make it work.  It's part of thier job..
