  1. Depends on the zoo and what their interaction rules are. When i volunteered I got to do  docent type of duties, cleaning duties and sometimes other things like feeding resident baby animals or going into an exhibit to help with jobs. Some zoos have insurance that limits what a volunteer can do so it ranges from zoo to zoo. Some of my favorite jobs were:

Flying the raptors for the raptor show

Feeding baby animals (especially the baby tapir who was the cutest thing)

Introducing people to animals they had never encountered before and helping to educate them about those animals - especially snakes!

Volunteering to help with night time public programs such as 'night at the zoo' where groups could go around the zoo at night and learn about the animals and receive special presentations.

Overall i had a great time volunteering.

  2. You will most likely be a lot of cleaning:  hosing, sweeping, mopping, etc.  You might also get to do some diet preparation..chopping up fruits and vegetables, etc.  Depending on the zoo and what animals you work with, you may also get to interact with the public a little telling them about the animals you are caring for.
