Question:

What can I expect to happen if I opted for a D&C?

I was diagnosed with a blighted ovum last week after three weeks of waiting. My doctor didn't put any pressure on me to get a d&c just said I could schedule one if and when I wanted to.

So I'm leaning towards having the procedure done. Anyone like to talk about their experiences with the procedure? What kind of anesthesia did they use? What was the pain like? How quickly were you up doing things? Did you get your period soon after?

  1. I had one with an epidural and no pain at the time, about two days with menstrual-like cramps and tylenol. Up and around after that and a period a couple weeks later. No big deal. God bless.

  2. First of all I am so so sorry for your loss I know how bad this hurts and I am truly sorry!

I had a missed miscarriage in May and my Doc also offered me the option of having a DNC or natural miscarriage...I took the DNC path and I was also very scared but this is how my experience went.....I went into the hospital got ready for the procedure they gave me the anesthesia and the next thing I remember I was waking up in the recovery room...I had to go pee before they would let me go home...once I got home the bleeding was pretty heavy but I was up and moving around that evening with no pain....over the next couple of days I had heavy bleeding but still no pain and about three days later I had no more bleeding!  And it was all over, through the whole thing I had very little pain....so don't be scared about the pain!

Again I am so sorry and I hope this helped to ease your mind, time will ease your heart!

  3. A D&C is done to clean out the uterus after a miscarriage (and other reasons too) - you will be under a general anaesthetic or epidural, so you will feel nothing.

When I had mine, I went home the following day, but these days it is probably done and then you can go home after a couple of hours.

You may spontaneously abort soon anyway - with a blighted ovum there is no baby there.

  4. I had a blighted ovum and had a d&c i had general anesthestic, so didnt feel a thing, bled for a few days, didnt have any pain. I think u get ur period at month after my mums had 3 d&c's ive had 1. Her last one was a blighted ovum. I got pregnant 3wks after my d&c so im not sure about the period but i think my mum got hers a month later.

Sorry about what happen by the way

  5. I had a blighted ovum, and was given the option of waiting to pass on its own or the d&c.  I opted for the d&c, just to get it over with.  My Dr alos said that with the d&c, it clears out the whole uterus, and makes it a better host to future pregnancies, and that with the d&c I would be pregnant again within 3 months (I was and carried to term)  They put you under...for what feels like forever, but is really about 20 minutes.  I took it easy for a day or so, then was up and doing normal things.  The pain is no worse than period cramps.  You will get bleeding for about a week or so after...then mine started again the next cycle.  My Dr told me to wait one full cycle before trying again.
