Question:

What can I feed my cat (inexpensively) if there is no cat food available? I live in a developing country.?

I live in a developing country where there is an overabundance of street kitties. I ended up adopting one from a family who's cat had kittens. I am a volunteer for an organization and don't have a lot of money, though I'll certainly do what I can to take care of this kitty. I was able to find some dry cat food (though it's for adult cats) and there are canned sardines and other fish. We have eggs a plenty. I buy meat sometimes though it's a bit cost-prohibitive. I also buy chicken sometimes... maybe once a month each on the chicken and beef.

Anyone have suggestions? This is a smart and sweet kitty and I certainly don't want to do her any harm by feeding her wrong, but I'm used to the US where cat food is cheap and easy to buy.

Her litter is dirt from outside, and her toys are soda bottle rings, but she seems happy... I just need to feed her right.

  1. Chicken! I personally feed a ground Raw Meat, Bones and Organ based diet to my cats and they are incredibly healthy on it. I HIGHLY recommend it. While scary at first, once I got the hang of it and felt comfortable with it it's a snap to prepare.

Cats are obligate carnivores after all and must derive ALL their nutrients from meat based sources. They are unable to absorb them from any other source. Despite thousands of years of domestication they remain strictly carnivorous. True and honest meat eaters and that is what they need most. Protein from meat!

If you are interested in feeding a raw diet some great places to start learning are http://www.catinfo.org/  , http://www.catnutrition.org/  , and http://www.felinefuture.com/nutrition/  .

If you would like to try raw with your cats and don’t want to get all technical about it but want to try a trusted, time tested and balanced raw diet you can order from http://www.felinespride.com/products/cat...  . I purchased this myself when I first started and my cats loved it!

Another premade Raw you can try is Natures Varity. I personally have never used this but know many people that do and it’s pretty easy to find http://www.naturesvariety.com/content.la...

  2. Here are some things to absolutely NOT feed your cat:

Onions and garlic, tomatoes, raw potatoes, chocolate, raw eggs, and MILK.

Here are some food options for her:

Scramble 2 whole eggs and mix with 1tbsp of shredded or diced carrots.

Here is a website with lots of ideas:

    Good luck.

  3. Try and see if she likes some kinds of fruit and vegetables.  My kitten loves to eat grapes, pears, avocados, bananas and mangoes. You should NOT feed her greasy foods, foods with preservatives and chocolate.

Cat are great they find pleasure and joy in the simplest things so try to play with her. Also if possible let her go outside (with supervision of course) and probably she will find something to eat and play with.

  4. whatever you have is better than starving. if you can find any find of cat food use that if not make the best of what you have.

  5. * If its hard for to eat hard cat food, put water in it and mush it up!! works great!

*You can feed her eggs, but scramble them!!! do not give them to her raw

    * make sure she has plenty of clean water or even give her milk sometimes

    * Give her tiny pieces of cheese

    * and as far as meat goes, stick to tuna and chicken!!

    hope i helped a little

  6. Here is a cat food recipe:

2 cans sardines packed in oil

    2/3 cup cooked rice

2 chicken livers, cooked in water and drained

    1/4 cup chopped parsley

Combine all ingredients in a food processor or blender and process just until mixture is blended. Store in refrigerator, tightly covered.

    * also take a look at www.i-love-cats.com/cat-food recipes.html  they have quite a few recipes! Hope this helps.

  7. Adding water to the dry food will work fine but you can't leave it sit out all day if your adding moisture to it. Chicken or turkey baby food is great and they love it...stay away from anything with onions or garlic, anything that has high sodium or fat. Dont rely on other foods for too long if you can help it though, cats need certain combinations of nurients in cat food. Dont give her milk, it will make her sick, cats need a special milk suppliment.

  8. i give my grown cat milk, tuna, and  fish sticks( she tried one)

  9. my aunt while in panama would feed her dogs: cooked rice mixed with scraps that she got from the butcher and then cooked, mash it together. adding a cooked egg would also be good for the coat. she just boiled the butcher scraps to get the meat off of the bones to add to the rice. the dogs ate it up and I would imagine so will your kitten.

I hope this helps. she has to be better with you than trying to find food on her own. don't worry about her toys, my well fed happy cat here in the US won't play with anything other than the rings of of milk jugs, soda bottles, etc. so I quit wasting my money a long time ago. had one that would only play with the cellophane cigarette pack enclosure.

    good luck and stay safe.
