What can I get a friend of mine and her fiance for their engagement party?

I'd take a bottle of wine or champagne, if they drink alcohol. The tradition is to give something to prepare them for the wedding, but it seems that tradition has gone to the place where old wedding traditions go, in favor of the greedy gimme big presents at every wedding related function tradition.

You don't need to bring a gift to the party, you save that for the wedding. But if you want to bring something, maybe a bottle of champagne and/or simple flowers for the soon to be bride. (I know i love to get flowers, doesnt matter who they're from or what they're for)

As an engagement party is not a gift-giving occasion, a card will suffice. If you want to bring a hostess gift, a bottle of wine is always nice.

If it's an engagement party then you'll have to buy more gifts in the future... the bachelor(ette) party, the wedding gift, anniversary gifts, maybe even baby gifts.

The ideal gift for an engagement party is small and not expensive, but something that shows that you truly understand how the two people are meant to be together. Who knows, you might even score a place among the groomsmen or bridesmaids (if you haven't already).

So strictly speaking, a gift is optional (a card being the minimum anyone could reasonably consider remotely required)... but I highly recommend a tasteful, sentimental gift to really show them you care.
