This means that as well as meat she will not eat anything with carbohydtaes in eg. bread, pasta, rice etc. I'm beginning to dread mealtimes as I just don't know what to give her - I'm also on a very low budget so can afford fancy foods. i have asked her what she would eat and she doesn't know, but is upset as she is hungry.

Does anyone have any ideas?

  1. Feed her a delicious bowl of steam.

    All foods contain carbs. ;/

  2. salads with nuts and beans

  3. if shes hungry then she needs to eat something.

the only thing she can have really is cheesey vegatables!

  4. 'mande' is correct.

Carbohydrates are in virtually all foods. Complex carbs are essential for brain health. The body needs them each day. They play an important role in energy production.

A good variety of wholegrains, fruits, veg, nuts etc is essential for good health. Here is the Vegetarian Society's Recipe Index, there are lots of awesome recipes to try!:

    http://www.vegsoc.org/cordonvert/recipes...

Tofu is delicious & very versatile- there are lots of tofu recipe out there.

It's impossible to eliminate all sugars and starch from your diet though. All I can say is give her plenty of wholesome, nutritious, healthy meals and she will be fine. Good luck =]

  5. make her eat carbs , sorry but she has already given up a large amount of fat by giving up meat. For breakfast fruit smoothie and a boiled free range egg.

Brown rice and steamed veg with mixed beans is a all round good meal.

For lunch chopped raw veg/salad, cheese and mixed beans on a jacket potato.

Bean Chili/Veg Curry/Quorn Mince on jacket potatoes or with brown rice are also a healthy choice.

She won't need the no carbs c**p with this kind of diet.

The low carb diet convinces your body that you are starving and it eats fat & muscle.

  6. My boyfriend went on a 'no carb' diet (its the atkinson one isn't it?) , he lost loads of weight really quickly but it all came straight back on.  Also, he lived on bacon, steaks and lettuce for three weeks!  He stank... tell your daughter she simply can't have this diet!

I think your daughter has the wrong end of the stick here, the atkinson diet does allow some carbohydrates, but just not high carb things like potatoes and bread.

  7. She won't eat carbs?  Or she can't ?  Have you considered she may be wheat gluten sensitive maybe?    Will she eat rice, gluten-free noodles, etc?   Might be worth a try.   You might also want to talk to a doc...she could be having digestion issues.

In the meantime, any fruits and veg will give her calories.   Will she accept carbs in the form of potatoes?  root vegetables?

One substitue for mashed tatoes I think is really good is mashed califlower.

Check out some veg cookbooks from your local library for ideas.

  8. Why's she on a no-carb diet? Please don't tell me she's taking advice from 'Dr' Atkins. She needs to be eating a balanced diet which includes carbs. There are 2 types of carbs and the one she should be avoiding is simple carbohydrates like those found in refined sugar/rice/bread etc. Complex carbohydrates on the other hand are an essential part of a helthy diet. These include unrefined products such as wholegrain bread/pasta/rice etc.

Please tell your diet to stop following fad diets. If she's a vegetarian, that's great but a healthy vegetarian CAN'T avoid carbs. Tell her to read The China Study by T Colin Campbell.

  9. Well, since you are asking, I shall give you my opinion.

Personally, I'd just give her what the rest of the family was eating, and if she didn't want it due to meat or carbohydrates, she'd just have to go without. If she protested, she'd get punished. She'd soon snap out of the crazy phase she was going through, and my life would be easier and her health much better.

  10. I can understand the vegetarian thing but not the carbs thing. Being a vegetarian is limiting enough. She'll get very ill if she keeps being so picky with her food. How old is she? Perhaps this is peer pressure/bullying. Have a word with her and ask her why she is on a diet.

P.s. Eating disorders can be brought on by low self-esteem and bullying. Just because she is over weight at the moment doesn't mean she's not anorexic. It doesn't mean she is either, but by the sound of it you should be reading up on it. Maybe taking her to the G.P about it and asking of SAFE ways to loose weight, not crash dieting.

    All the best

  11. The day any of my children come out with that sort of drivel is the day they buy and cook their own food. Vegetarian is one thing, it's manageable and can fit in with and be adaptable with other meals but this no carbs rubbish and other fads are quite another.

Despite her convictions she does need complex carbs to sustain her and give her slow release energy. Could you talk her into eating the wholegrain varieties of her dreaded carbs maybe?

  12. she needs carbs. seriously, she cannot live without this important part of her diet.

  13. shes going to get anorexic thats impossible even a carrot has a carb shes insane tell her to get some help

  14. The no-carb thing is insane.

Your brain lives on carborhydrates. If it doesn't get them in your diet, it starts eating muscle and organ tissue to convert to what it gets from carbs.

These 'low-carb' diets are insane. They've done studies that show they do not work better than low-fat, and low-calorie diets.

I think your daughter is possibly on the road to anorexia.

You have a lot bigger problem than just what to find for her to eat.

  15. she would literally be living on veg and fruit, this it not healthy at all, why is she no taking carbs? perhaps its for weight loss.  very limited...veg curry, veg kebabs, you could make burgers with soya mince, stir fry with sweet chilli sauce,

soups with soya peices..........hhhmmm very limited

  16. Well, vegetables is an obvious suggestion. Also, what about yogurt, low calorie milk products, almond milk, soy milk, and garden burgers. Also, many Indian dishes are vegetarian and no-carb. I hope that helps.

  17. Make a vegetable stir fry with a peanut sauce for protein.

In the sauce, put garlic, green onion, ginger, soy sauce, peanut butter, vinegar &/or lime, sesame oil, orange juice, something spicy if you like it hot and cilantro.  Just put all these ingredients into the blender, or chop them and then shake them in a jar if you don't have a blender.  Saute a mix of veggies, pour the sauce into the pan to coat the veggies and to heat the sauce and you can garnish with cilantro, toasted peanuts or sesame seeds.  You can play around with the seasonings in the sauce if you don't have these ingredients.  These are my favourites.

    Hope this helps!

  18. Hello again Obviously my last attempt at solving this Q, for you did not work  Right here is an idea. Try some mashed potato with a tea spoon of mixed herbs plus some grated cheese if she will have cheese then some soya bean lightly fried, or baked beans, and a small side salad.

    Wholesome and colourful, and inexpensive.

Then be firm with her because much of this is attention seeking. I`ve met this before when counselling irate mums.

The fact that the girl does no know what she wants to eat goes a long way  to bear this theory out.

Report back on the progress, or lack of it please.

  19. No carbohydrates?

    All vegetables are mainly carbohydrates.

Eggs, cheese and nuts have carbohydrates.

I can't think of anything except meat, or pure fat,

      that has no carbs.

She may have to rethink her plan.

  20. That's impossible that she eats no carbs.  Bad carbs..that I can understand but fruits and veggies have carbs too.  The body needs carbs.  Whole grains are a part of a healthy diet...switch to whole wheat pasta, bread and brown rice..those are GOOD for her.  It's the refined grains that are bad.

  21. Hi nettyone,

Here is a great website http://www.lowcarbvegetarianrecipes.com/... this link will bring you to a page that follows the South Beach Diet.  Click on the Home button to take you to the rest of the site.

Obviously, you can't be a no-carb vegetarian, but you can certainly be a low-carb vegetarian.  Just watch for calories and make sure your daughter exercises.  In fact, maybe the two of you can do this together.  That would be great for some support for her.

    Good luck to you.

  22. how bout fruits and  vegetables???

i'm on a similar diet, not by choice.

she needs to learn to like salads, fresh fruit, nuts, legumes.  if she is not vegan, then add in some cheese, yogurt.

and Hollywood is right, the body uses Carbs to metabolize energy for the central nervous system and everything else we do.  i do get the impression that you are talking about grains/pastas/breads from a diet standpoint though, so just have her eat healthy.

the other thing you really should be looking at is how realistic her diet goals are.  cutting back breads/pasta will help, but you shouldn't deprive her because that's not obtainable in the long run.  you might want to think about giving her only whole grains that are high in fiber and just not as much bread/pasta.  That is probably more realistic.

  23. HELLO

WILL SHE EAT RICE WITH VEGETABLES BUT WASH THE RICE WHEN COKED TO REDUCE STARCH

OTHERWISE SHES EATING A LOT OF SALADS AND SPANISH OMELETS (OMELETTE FULL OF VEGGIES)

IF SHE IS HUNGRY GIVE A CARROT OR BOILED EGGS

  24. cottage cheese with fruit

cooked vegetables (but these are mostly carbs so she would have to be really careful)

    grapes and cheese

make her stop the no carb diet! its not healthy

  25. Tell her to make something for herself.  A no-carb vegetarian diet is ridiculous.  She can't expect you to figure out what to make her.  If she is old enough to make such strict dietary decisions, she is old enough to make the food herself.

Once you cut out carbs from a vegetarian diet you don't have much left.  Fry her a head of cabbage cut for cole slaw in olive oil.  Other than that she is just going to have to exercise if she wants to lose weight.

  26. This no-carb, low-carb business is insane and unfortunately will never die.

All plant foods have carbs. Carbohydrates are necessary for normal body function.  Animal foods--milk, eggs, meat--have no carbs and no fiber.

If she wants to be a vegetarian, she has to eat some carbs.  She should eat BROWN rice, WHOLE WHEAT pasta, and whole wheat bread.  Yes, they're carbs, but they have lots of fiber and will help her feel full.  She should eat lots of fruit and vegetables--raw veggies in hummus or salsa is an excellent snack.  Apples dipped in peanut butter is a good snack.  Yes, peanut butter (and other nut butters) have fat, but it's a healthy fat, and nuts are also good sources of protein.

But she can't do the zero carb thing at all.  There's just no way.

  27. if she doesn't eat any carbohydrates, she will die.

the basics for survival are carbs, protein and fat.

call her doctor and get her referred to a nutritionist, you both need to be educated on proper eating. you don't need fancy food to be healthy, If you are on a low budget, use alot of black beans, they are cheap if you buy them dry, and they are high protein and fiber, plus many other health benefits. talk to a nutritionist

  28. you need to show her that carbs are essential for life, but she doesnt need to pig out on them, she just needs to eat a little for survival. she wont get as good nutritian but she needs atleast some. cooked vegies are good, mashed potatoes with cheese are exelent... surf the web for good inexpensive meals

  29. Unfortunately she will become cranky from lack of energy due to not eating carbs, how about complex carbohydrates such as bananas, beans, lentils? (Google for a bigger list)

They are slow release so they should leave her feeling satisfied for longer and less likely to feel the urge to snack. Also because they are complex they are less likely to be converted into fat.

  30. Vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans
