when I tell them that I am leaving the preschool for another job. I will tell them in a way they understand during circle time, but what could I give to them or do for them and the families before I leave?

  1. make sure the curtains match the drapes

  2. If you can afford to do it, a book chosen for each child with a handwritten message and the date would be a lovely choice.  It wouldn't need to be a very expensive book, maybe a paper back copy of the Kissing Hand would be nice.  Or you could get small pencil boxes and put in a pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener, a small notebook, and a Hershey's Kiss for each child.  You could put the child's name and the date on the outside of the pencil box to make it more personal.

  3. Go online to Oriental Trader (google it) and they have cheap trinkets that you can buy and hand out.

  4. have a class picture taken with you in it.  make copies for all the kids.   write each of them a little note.. give the note and picture to each kid about a week before you leave....

  5. you can all give them some special present that is specifically related to them and how you connected with them and what you will remember them for so each of them feel special and that they will feel like you care for them.

  6. When I left the class I had taught for 10 years (some of the older kids were in it all that time) I gave each child a card that I had written a "personal" message in and a themed book mark encouraging them.  I create the note card wih the school's logo and put a quote on the back that was an encouragement (actually, it was the poem that was used in Akila and the Bee abou being who you are).  The notes were all printed off my computer (because my handwriting stinks!) and were a general thanks, you've been great, keep going, glad I had a chance ot meet you kinda thing.  The kids I knew better, I did put some more personal stuff into the letter, a personal memeory or something like that.

Everyone really liked them and were sorry to see me go.  Several parents said they wished they had known - I told the kids the last night I was there because I didn't think I could do it any earlier.

Nobody really needs little cheap trinkets, but it you can swing a little book with an inscription that would be nice.
