What can I put in a planter box besides flower or fake flowers to make my yard look pretty?

I have a planter box that gets no sun. I do not like fake flowers. I want it to look modern and fun.

I like to use edible ornamentals.  Maybe you could put in a selection of unusual herbs like Purple Basil, Golden Sage, and others that are out of the ordinary?  Not only do they look nice, you can also trim bits off and have fresh herbs for cooking!

there are loads of different grasses you can buy , and they are really fashionable at the moment

There are many dwarf evergreen plants that grow slowly.  One could put quite a few in a planter, there are different colour foliage, and even a bamboo.

how about some herbs?  or you could use the idea of some sort of grass and then add (to that) a couple little lawn ornaments or stones (found at a garden center or even your local walmart)...
