What can I send soldiers for 4th of July?

My brother is in Iraq and we send his troop of 85 soldiers a big box to celebrate each holiday. We want to send a 4th of July box, but we need ideas of what to send.

Don't suggest decorations, as we've already got that taken care of. Don't suggest signs, letters of support, or photos - we know to send all the regular things people send soldiers.

Please suggest food/drink items that could be easily sent to Iraq (will still be good if it melts, won't spoil) as well as anything unique that they might like.

We're sending the stuff for them all to make s'mores (they can make a bonfire), but what else says summer and patriotism?

It is an Army Infantry troop, with ONLY men on the FOB, and no access to clean water (except bottled), microwaves, fridges, or freezers.

It must also be something my family can afford 85 of, since everyone must get one, so please don't suggest something like calling cards.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Hrm, bottled water and the individual packets of Gatorade mix would be good.  You could do some Blue Raspberry and Strawberry...or any other flavors in Blue and Red, since they have no access to fresh water, and are easy to handle.

Homemade treats, like granola, trail mix, and the like are excellent, as they can be indiviually packaged and are healthy and nutritious.  Jerky, dried fruits, and nut mixes would be good as well.

Good luck, and thanks so much for thinking of our men and women overseas.

  2. From what my family and friends stationed in Iraq tell me, they're always happy to get beef jerky, rice krispies treats and ANYTHING homemade. You could ask your local schools to take donations to help you with the costs of whatever you decide to send.

Edit: Read your question more thoroughly; scratch the homemade unless it's something that stores and mails well. =)

  3. Lollies....pictures painted by children (get the local school involved)...comedy dvds (they can all watch it at once!)

good luck its a lovely thing to do
