What can I start growing July/August in Southeast Michigan?

I'm looking for something that's relatively low-maintenance, preferably has a short growing season, and is edible. I'm interested particularly in lettuces. Space is virtually unlimited. Gardening experience=zero, but willing to learn.

  1. Check with the local extension office or the 4h or your congregation. You might try and do a salad mix in a raised bed and where you get a little morning sun and evening shade. I think you should have good sandy top soil there and not much clay.

  2. Most lettuce do not tolerate extreme heat (July and August) without some type of protection. They will grow but will be bitter.  You can grow lettuce as a fall crop by planting in early August with shade. Once temperatures drop, usually the middle of August it will be okay.

I suggest starting by testing your soil. Most local garden centers will have a kit, some will perform the test onsite. (there is a fee)

    July

Plant cool-weather crops for a fall harvest. Sow seeds of radishes, lettuce, spinach, onions and beets and plant transplants of

broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage. Quick-maturing warm-weather crops, such as beans and summer squash can also be planted

    now.

    August

Complete fall garden planting by direct seeding carrots, beets, kohlrabi, kale and snap beans early this

month. Lettuce, spinach, radishes and green onion can be planted later in August and early September.

Don’t forget to thin seedlings to appropriate spacing as needed.

Most gardening is low maintenance if you properly mulch your garden with organic material.  Garden centers will sell seeds and plants for the next few weeks.  See the websites below.
