  1. You should use an External HDD. CDs and DVDs have a tendency to break down over time even if properly taken care of.

  2. To know more about

    Genealogy

  3. Get a 1TB (TB = terabyte = 1000GB) external HD

Then just put the pics on that

  4. Wow, you should have been doing this all along... computers break.

You need to save your photos, docs, and whatever else that's important to you on some external medium (cd, dvd, flash, external hd).  If you have a lot of info, and you have a usb port, consider an external hard drive.  You can just copy and paste whatever folders have your data onto the external.

Remember, everything thing you create should be in two places: on your computer and on something external to your computer.  This includes photos, docs, email, and any software you buy and download (along with their keys).

  5. Photos don't really care much what operating system you put them on, so if you are able, save them by burning to CD, or DVD, or transfer to an external hard drive, or flash drives. Flash drives generally won't hold as much as the others, but when I have reformatted I have combined emailing photos (and files) of low resolution to another computer of mine, or transferring them  by compatible external hard drive or flash drives (more time consuming as generally smaller so far).

Best case for future reference is to back them up on a CD or DVD in case of computer failure so you won't lose those photos forever.
