What can I use as a backing to strengthen a thin material I'm using to recover a sofa?

I am recovering a sofa that didn't hold up to regular use because it was covered in a rather weak canvas material. I'm covering it with another fabric that's not all that durable either, but it suits the room beautifully. What can I use as a backing to strengthen the fabric? Preferably something that irons on so I won't have to struggle with two separate pieces. Thanks for your help!!

Fusible backing. You can get it in many lengths

Nothing you use will strengthen fragile material.  Buy the proper weight.
