Question:

What can I use to freshen up my room without bothering the person in the room next to me?

The room in question is a part of a suite with a common room, bathroom, and four single bedrooms. I usually use Bath&BodyWorks Wallflowers (which work wonderfully, by the way), but the person who sleeps in the room adjacent to mine has requested that I not use them because of some awful reactions she has.

I've tried rubbing dryer sheets on my bed and on the carpet of my room, but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Of course, sprays and candles are completely out of the question as well.

I'm a fairly neat and clean person. The common room is clean, and the bathroom is cleaned biweekly. But it's quite a large pet peeve of mine not to have my personal space scented pleasantly to some degree. Any tips?

(Also, while we're at it, is there anything I can do about the bathroom?)

  1. Well, if you can afford it fresh flowers smell great. You can try some potpouri in a bowl, or a plug in freshner.  Good Luck.

  2. I put dryer sheets in my air vents... it isn't too heavily scented, so it probably wouldn't bother the girl next to you.. but you certainly can tell the difference if you're in the room... also, try spraying your bed and carpet with Febreeze. That shouldn't bother her either. Fresh flowers also smell nice. Lilac is my favourite. I also like peonies. I like things to smell nice too haha

  3. Try putting some essential oils like lavender or rose on a piece of cotton wool and place that on your radiator, if you have one. Otherwise, you can rub a little on an incandescent light bulb, but it won't work on an energy saver.

What about an oil burner? You dilute the oils in water and put a tea-light underneath, so the scent is released gently over time with the steam from the water.

Otherwise, just a small dish of essential oil sitting around will contribute a little nice scent.

  4. Does this person just have an allergic reaction to artificial fragrance?  I personally like wallflowers also but I know some people can't stand such a high concentration of artificial fragrance.

I would check out the ginger and "peace of mind" (peppermint) candles from Origins, those use natural essential oils to scent your space,

otherwise, I really like  both Febreeze and Oust sprays - they do a good job of keeping an area smelling fresh - Oust supposedly also kills germs in the air!

Febreeze has some nice limited edition scents in the fall, too.

  5. I use strong smelling flowers and put dryer sheets under my mattress protector too. Another tip is to sprinkle baking soda on your carpet if you have one, leave for a while then vacuum.

I also make a point of opening the window of a room to air a few times a week. You can also get fragnance wick things which work well and have a subtle fragnance. If the bathroom really annoys you, just keep a spray handy, or even antibacterial wipes and have a quick wipe-down when you are using it.
