  1. The pineal gland only becomes active after dark and shuts down in the daylight (one reason why people working night shift may have sleep problems). By regulating levels of melatonin, our bodies create the 'sleep-wake cycle' or circadian rhythm. Of course, the process is more complex than this, and there are other things that contribute to healthy sleep. However, sufficient production of serotonin and melatonin is crucial in promoting and maintaining normal sleep patterns.

Natural remedies can help support healthy sleep patterns:

--Avena sativa is used by herbalists to address common nervous exhaustion and also as an effective nerve tonic.

--Scuttelaria laterifolia has a long history of effective traditional use and is a well respected nerve tonic.

--Passiflora incarnatais a gentle yet effective soothing herb often recommended by herbalists for people who tend to worry occasionally and to support peace and harmony in the spirit

--Coffea (30C) is a remedy of particular benefit for people who may find it difficult to ‘wind down’.

--Nux vomica (30C) is another remedy especially effective for the ambitious, perfectionist person who cannot unwind easily.

In addition, consider the following tips to naturally support healthy sleep:

--Exercise regularly (but not just before bed time!)

--Avoid alcohol and caffeine products at least 4 hours before bedtime.

--Try to use the hours before bedtime for relaxation to help your mind and body to wind down

--Have a warm bath just before you go to bed

--If you are worried, anxious or depressed, talk about your feelings to someone you trust

--If you have unresolved issues or problems that are causing stress, consult a counselor for help in making changes to your life.
