Our dog is about to have puppies and the yard is full of ants. The puppies will be off the ground, but I just want to make sure they dont get to them. We tried the fertilizer with ant poison a while back but obviously didnt work. I have heard citrus peel, cinnamon, chili powder...do these kill the ones that are there or only keep them out of the yard? Any other ideas?

  1. I copied the following from Wiki

    # Put a liberal amount of 3-1 oil (not car oil) there. This may have to be repeated several times.

    # Spray any that persist with water in a small sprayer. Vinegar may be added to help repel them.

    # Place a piece of onion outside on the cement, it helps to repel ants.

    # Alternative: Use 100% orange oil, NOT orange cleaner (oil is available at nursery, garden or farm centers), dilute it to about 10% with a mix of vinegar and rubbing alcohol**. Shake well before each use. This is also an insecticide/fungicide. Not instantaneous knock-down, but watch; it KILLS ants, and fleas too.

  2. Buy those things. They are round

  3. I would dust with Ortho or sevin underneath the kennel, and around the perimeter.  Use the granules in the rest of the yard.  Ants will kill the pups, so be careful.  Treating them now is a good idea.  I would go with something strong to wipe them out, and then water it in.  It will dissipate with time.  Salt will kill the grass, and they might just eat the citrus peel.

  4. I heard cayenne pepper works.

  5. Use a mix of cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle it here and there. The ants will come and pick up the sugar, along with the cinnamon, and take it back to their queen. Ants can’t digest cinnamon and once the queen dies from not being able to digest the cinnamon the colony will die without her.  This will kill of the colony and not harm your pups.

  6. a trail of salt soon stops them

  7. This site has some really good ideas:

If you have a colony that is right next to your house, you can make the ants relocate by repeatedly flooding the earth where they reside. A soapy water mix works best as it kills some ants, and causes the rest to grab their stuff and go. If the ants aren’t inside of your home don’t worry about them unless they bite. Many species will repel termites, so it’s cheap insurance.

I have also heard that if you sprinkle corn meal, cream of wheat or grits around, they will take it back to the queen and it will kill her.  They eat it and it absorbs the fluid in their bodies and makes them explode.

  8. Your foot

  9. A trail of salt will kill your lawn or nearby plants.

Sevin is a cholinesterase inhibitor that has a chance of making your puppies retarded before killing them.

Instead of putting a bandaid on the problem, solve it. Hire an exterminator who will use bifenthrin, cyfluthrin or fipronil to rid your yard of ants. If you solve the problem, you won't have to worry about the puppies or the ants. These three ingredients have a very low toxicity to mammals but kill the heck out of ants.

Kim G... cinnamon/sugar does not work. Stop spreading this rumor. Ants do not eat solid food. Ants do not eat cinnamon. Ants can not swallow cinnamon. It's impossible... not virtually impossible but completely impossible! Check the link below.
