  1. Copper sulfate also called bluestone will deter roots from spreading in that direction. you can put it in your sewer or around the tank but it will have to be dug down so the roots can't find a way around it.

  2. 1.cut down the tree

    2. have the stump removed

    3. if you can't have the stump taken out - drill holes into it

    4. put root killer into the drilled holes

    5. remember to have a septic guy clean out the distribution box

  3. You don't have to necessarily kill the tree.  If you place copper around the tank and lateral lines the roots will not grow past the copper.  This is what we do in cases of a home owner not wanting to have to remove a tree in order for a septic system to be installed.

  4. gasoline or kerosene poured on the roots will kill them ,but it will soak into the soil so be careful.

  5. If you cut the tree down, Bonide makes a product called Stump Out. The Home Depot carries it. Just follow the instructions carefully.

  6. Most products labeled as "brush killer" will have directions for killing tree stumps.  Most of the time it involves making cuts in the stump (I usually drill holes) and then slathering the stump with full-strength brush killer concentrate.

This is a very effective method, if you repeat the process a few times.
